festivals The fiestas in Arbizu start on the 23rd of June and finish on the 29th. During fiestas the groups organize dinners at the old handball court. People of the same age dress in blouses of the same color. Every year there are less people attending these dinners. Instead of putting up stands or “txoznas”, the political parties and the organizers open up the basements of some houses. The young people have a club like this which is open all year and they open a bar to the public in fiestas. The fiestas are organized by civic groups and by the Town Hall. That system works well as the young people take part although the older people don’t, and that is not good. As they are the first fiestas of the summer in the neigborhood, many people come from around about as they have been looking forward to some fiestas. In midweek there are few people about, and at the weekend there are too many people about. The local people prefer the midweek atmosphere. The Town Hall distributes wine for the meals. The pilgrimage to the San Juan hermitage is the nicest of all and at night they jump over the bonfires.
